Arrested on Long Island: A Guide for Manhattan Residents
Manhattan has the simplest trip of any borough — both courthouses are reachable on a one-seat train from either Penn Station or Grand Central Madison. If you were arrested on Long Island and live in Manhattan, the train is also more predictable than driving, and for a 9:30 a.m. calendar call that matters more than raw speed.
Everything below on getting to Long Island court from Manhattan assumes a weekday morning calendar call, which is when most of these cases are heard. Times and fares are current as of September 2026 and should be checked before you travel.
Penn Station or Grand Central Madison?
Both are LIRR fare Zone 1, so the price is the same either way. Grand Central Madison, under Grand Central Terminal, is now the primary origin for the Hempstead Branch and is served by the 4, 5, 6, 7 and S. Penn Station is served by the 1, 2, 3, A, C and E, and sits a block from Herald Square. Take whichever is closer to you.

From Hempstead station, 99 Main Street is about two blocks. You walk it.
Manhattan to Suffolk County District Court, Central Islip

Then two and a half more miles. The Central Islip station is about two and a half miles from the Cohalan Court Complex, per the federal bankruptcy court in that complex and Touro Law School, which sits inside it. Suffolk County Transit Route 17 runs between them, roughly every 30 minutes on weekday mornings, $2.25. Allow 20 to 40 minutes, or take a cab from the station.
For a 9:30 a.m. Central Islip call, leave Midtown by about 7:00 a.m. That is roughly an hour and a quarter on the train, up to half an hour for the bus, and a security line at the end.
Driving to Central Islip in rush hour is a gamble

Driving to Long Island court from Manhattan for work
Both trans-river tunnels that lead east — the Queens Midtown and the Hugh L. Carey — permit trucks but clear only twelve feet one inch. A box truck taller than that has to go north to the RFK, Bronx-Whitestone or Throgs Neck bridge instead. Once across, the Long Island Expressway is truck-legal all the way to Exit 56 for Central Islip. For Hempstead, come off the LIE onto Route 24, Hempstead Turnpike, which becomes Fulton Avenue a block from the courthouse.
The Cross Island, Grand Central, Northern State, Southern State and Meadowbrook parkways are closed to commercial vehicles. Within the city, truck drivers are also required to carry a bill of lading or similar document showing origin and destination.
What time to leave for Long Island court from Manhattan
- Hempstead by train: a train out of Grand Central or Penn around 8:00 a.m. gets you there comfortably.
- Hempstead by car: leave by 7:30 a.m.
- Central Islip by train: leave Midtown by 7:00 a.m.
- Central Islip by car: leave by 7:00 a.m., and have a fallback if the LIE is closed.

Can my New York City lawyer handle this?
They can appear anywhere in the state. Whether that is the right choice is a different question — these are small courthouses with a fixed set of judges and parts, and knowing how a particular part runs is worth more here than in a large system.
Is a Long Island DWI different from a Manhattan DWI?
The statute is the same statewide. The practice is not. Nassau and Suffolk prosecute a large volume of these cases and have their own conventions on what gets reduced and what does not.
Do I need to be there for every appearance?
No, but the exceptions are narrower than people assume, and each stage has its own rule. See the main page for city residents for the stage-by-stage breakdown.
Do you have to make the trip to Long Island court from Manhattan at all?
Sometimes not. Whether your lawyer can cover a date without you depends on the stage of the case and on how it started — a desk appearance ticket leaves more room than a custodial arrest, and the judge decides either way. The rules, stage by stage with the statute for each, are on the main page for New York City residents.
One provision is worth knowing before your first date: under CPL 182.20(1)(b)(iv), if you ask to be arraigned by video and the court grants it on that basis, the only securing order available is release on your own recognizance. Whether that is the right move in your case is a conversation to have with a lawyer first, not a decision to make from Manhattan.

Long Island court from Manhattan: the short version
If you take one thing from this page, take this. Travelling to Long Island court from Manhattan is a two-part problem — the trip itself, and whether you need to make it at all.
- Check the courthouse on your ticket first. Nassau cases go to Hempstead, Suffolk cases from the five western towns to Central Islip, and East End arrests to that town’s justice court.
- Hempstead is walkable from the train. Central Islip is not. The Central Islip station sits about two and a half miles from the courthouse; Suffolk County Transit Route 17 covers the gap for $2.25.
- Calendars are called at 9:30 a.m. in both courts, with a magnetometer line before that. Be at the door by 8:45.
- If you drive a work vehicle, do not follow your phone. The parkways are closed to commercial traffic. Use the Long Island Expressway.
- Ask before every date whether you need to be there. Calendar calls and conferences can often be handled electronically under CPL 182.20(1)(c).
